This group forecasts the total precipitation in Central Park, New York City during the month of September 2026. The markets aim to determine if the amount of rainfall will exceed various thresholds, ranging from 1 inch to over 6 inches.
This market will resolve according to the total precipitation in inches in Central Park, New York City between September 1 and September 30, 2026, 11:59PM ET according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). If the reported value falls exactly between two brackets, then this market will resolve to the higher range bracket. The resolution source for this market will be NOAA, specifically the figure for September 2026 when the "Monthly summarized data" for "Central Park NY" is selected with the variable set to "Precipitation" at the https://www.weather.gov/wrh/climate?wfo=okx link once that figure is finalized for the whole month of September 2026. If the relevant data is not available by December 7, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, another credible resolution source will be chosen. The resolution source for this market measures precipitation to 2 decimal places (e.g., 1.54), thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving this market. Any revisions to precipitation recorded after data is finalized for this market's timeframe will not be considered for this market's resolution.
The event evaluates multiple precipitation thresholds for September 2026 at Central Park in New York City. Each market corresponds to a progressively higher rainfall amount, resolving to 'Yes' if the total monthly precipitation strictly exceeds its specified threshold—1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, or 4 inches. All markets share the same measurement source and time frame, with resolution based solely on the final recorded total. Higher-threshold markets inherently require more extreme conditions to settle positively, creating a tiered structure where outcomes cascade: any excess over 4 inches would satisfy all thresholds, while amounts between 3 and 4 inches would resolve only the lower three markets as 'Yes', and so on. No adjustments or external interpretations apply—raw data determines all outcomes simultaneously.
Prediction market odds, like those found in this market, often represent a 'wisdom of the crowd' perspective, aggregating diverse opinions and information. This can lead to forecasts that are as accurate, or even more accurate, than those produced by individual analysts or traditional weather models. However, it’s important to remember that prediction markets reflect beliefs about *probabilities*, not necessarily precise numerical predictions. Analyst forecasts might focus on specific amounts, while this market asks a broader question about whether certain precipitation levels will occur. The current volume of $191,840 suggests significant interest in this event.
Prices on Polymarket and Kalshi can diverge due to several factors. Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform has its own user base, trading dynamics, and fee structure, all of which can influence pricing. Differences in market design, such as the specific contracts offered or the liquidity available, also contribute. Furthermore, information flow and trader sentiment may vary between the two platforms, leading to differing interpretations of the same weather data. The 2.5 percentage point difference in implied probabilities reflects these varying viewpoints within this market.
This market resolves around Dec 8, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The total precipitation amount for New York City during September will be assessed using data from established meteorological sources. The specific amount that triggers a payout will depend on the contracts available on Polymarket and Kalshi, but the resolution will be based on objective, publicly available data. Traders can monitor the volume, currently at $191,840, as the resolution date approaches.
Several factors could significantly impact this market before it resolves. Major weather events, such as the formation of a hurricane or a prolonged period of rainfall, would likely cause substantial price movement. Changes in long-range weather forecasts from reputable sources, like the National Weather Service, could also shift trader sentiment. Additionally, any news related to climate patterns or unusual atmospheric conditions could influence trading activity. Monitoring these signals and the 24-hour volume of $5,993 will be crucial for understanding the market’s direction.
