Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the NYC air quality index market dashboard displays real-time odds and historical price movements for this prediction market centered on whether New York City's air quality index will fall below 100 by a specified date. The dashboard shows current market probability, 24-hour volume, and a price chart reflecting how trader sentiment has evolved. This data helps participants monitor consensus expectations around air quality conditions in the city and track how external events—such as weather patterns or pollution alerts—influence market pricing over time.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional analyst forecasts because they aggregate real-time trader behavior rather than relying on static models or expert opinion. In this market, traders are pricing in their collective assessment of whether air quality will improve to the target threshold, factoring in seasonal trends, recent pollution data, and meteorological patterns. Comparing the current market probability to published air quality forecasts from environmental agencies or meteorologists can reveal where the crowd sees upside or downside risk relative to official predictions.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader buy and sell orders into real-time probability quotes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders purchase shares representing "Yes" (air quality index below 100) or "No" (index at or above 100), and the price of each share reflects the crowd's confidence in that outcome. As new information emerges—pollution readings, weather forecasts, or seasonal shifts—traders adjust their positions, moving the market price up or down to reflect changing expectations.

This market resolves around Jul 21, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The resolution hinges on whether New York City's air quality index meets the specified threshold by the deadline. Traders should monitor official air quality data releases and environmental agency announcements as the resolution date approaches to assess the likelihood of the target being met.

Several catalysts could shift market odds significantly. Major weather events—such as high-pressure systems that trap pollution or frontal systems that clear the air—are primary drivers. Seasonal transitions, industrial activity changes, and regional wildfire activity all influence air quality readings. Additionally, policy announcements affecting emissions or traffic patterns in the city could reshape trader expectations. Real-time air quality index releases and forecasts from the EPA or local environmental agencies will likely trigger price movements as the resolution date approaches.
