Prediction market odds reflect real-money trader conviction and often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because markets price in tail risks and incorporate diverse information sources. While meteorologists issue point estimates and confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, this market allows traders to express probabilistic views and bet accordingly. Over time, markets can outperform static forecasts when traders have access to updated data or specialized local knowledge about Tokyo's microclimate and seasonal patterns.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker that converts buy and sell orders into implied probabilities for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Prices move continuously as new trades arrive, with wider spreads during low-volume periods and tighter spreads when liquidity is high. The cost to buy a share reflects the market's current belief in that outcome, and traders profit by correctly predicting whether the actual low will fall within their chosen range.
This market resolves around Jun 27, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Tokyo on June 27 is verifiable from credible public reporting. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual daily minimum against the predefined temperature brackets offered in the market. Traders who selected the bracket containing the verified low receive their payout, while positions outside that range expire worthless.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can all shift odds in this market. Tropical systems, heat waves, or unexpected cold fronts approaching Japan would trigger repricing as traders update their probability estimates. Additionally, historical temperature anomalies or climate reports released before June 27 may influence trader positioning, and as the event date nears, intraday weather updates and model consensus changes typically drive increased trading volume and volatility.
