Prediction market odds reflect the collective judgment of traders with real money at stake, often incorporating faster-moving data than traditional analyst forecasts. While meteorologists publish official temperature predictions based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates dispersed information from traders worldwide who may factor in local conditions, historical patterns, and recent model updates. The two sources rarely diverge sharply, but when they do, it often signals either new information entering the market or disagreement about model reliability for that specific date.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature bracket has its own contract, and the price of a share reflects the implied probability that the lowest temperature will fall within that range. As traders place orders, the price adjusts continuously, with higher prices indicating greater confidence in an outcome. Liquidity and trading volume directly influence how quickly prices respond to new weather information.
This market resolves around Jun 16, 2026, once June 16 has passed and the lowest temperature recorded in Tokyo that day is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the official recorded low against the temperature brackets offered in the market. Whichever bracket contains the actual lowest temperature will be marked correct, and traders holding shares in that outcome receive their payout while other positions expire worthless.
Major weather model updates, seasonal pattern shifts, and atmospheric pressure systems approaching Japan will all influence trader positioning. Tropical cyclones, monsoon activity, or unexpected cold fronts in mid-June could trigger sharp price swings. Additionally, revisions to long-range forecasts by meteorological agencies often prompt traders to rebalance positions. Real-time temperature data from early June and any official weather alerts will also drive trading activity as the event date approaches, making this market highly responsive to new atmospheric intelligence.
