Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment, historical volatility, and tail-risk pricing. While weather analysts rely on numerical models and satellite data to project June temperatures in Tokyo, this market aggregates the collective judgment of traders who profit or lose based on accuracy. Comparing the implied probabilities here to official forecasts from Japan's Meteorological Agency can reveal where the crowd sees asymmetric risk or where consensus models may be underweighting uncertainty.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) pool. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range has its own contract, and the price of each reflects the cumulative probability the market assigns to that outcome. As traders deposit capital and adjust positions, the AMM rebalances, moving prices up or down. The spread between bid and ask widens or narrows based on liquidity depth and recent trading activity.
This market resolves around Jun 15, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Tokyo on June 15 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual meteorological data against the predefined temperature brackets offered in the market. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome bracket receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day.
Major weather pattern shifts, seasonal anomalies, and updated long-range forecasts from meteorological agencies can significantly move prices in this market. El Niño or La Niña conditions, tropical cyclone activity in the Western Pacific, and atmospheric pressure systems weeks in advance all influence trader positioning. Additionally, historical temperature records for early June in Tokyo and real-time updates from weather models in the days leading up to June 15 tend to trigger sharp repricing. Unexpected geopolitical or volcanic events affecting atmospheric conditions could also create volatility.
