Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, risk appetite, and information asymmetries. While weather agencies publish deterministic temperature ranges based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial stakes in the outcome. Comparing the implied probabilities here to official forecasts can reveal where the crowd sees upside or downside risk. Both sources are valuable: analysts provide scientific rigor, while markets capture dynamic, forward-looking sentiment.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature bracket is represented as a separate contract, and the price of each reflects the probability the crowd assigns to that outcome. As new information arrives—updated weather models, seasonal patterns, or real-time conditions—traders adjust their positions, moving prices in response. The spread between bid and ask prices tightens as volume increases, making it cheaper to enter or exit positions.
This market resolves around Jun 18, 2026, once June 18 has passed and the lowest temperature in Shanghai can be verified. The outcome is confirmed against credible public reporting from established meteorological sources. Traders holding shares in the correct temperature bracket receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. The resolution window typically closes within hours of the event, ensuring rapid settlement and allowing participants to move capital to the next opportunity.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can significantly move prices in this market. Tropical systems, monsoon activity, or unexpected cold fronts would trigger sharp repricing. As June 18 approaches, intraday temperature readings and hourly forecasts become increasingly influential. News of climate anomalies or extreme weather elsewhere in Asia may also shift trader sentiment. The final 24 hours typically see the most volatile trading as actual conditions become clearer and late-arriving information forces final position adjustments.
