Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Shanghai July 9 temperature market dashboard displays real-time odds and historical price movements for contracts tied to the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 9. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the dashboard reflects current market prices, 24-hour trading volume, and cumulative liquidity. This market aggregates the collective forecast of participants betting on whether temperatures will fall within specific bands, offering a dynamic view of crowd expectations as the event date approaches.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment and financial incentives alongside meteorological models. While meteorologists publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market prices uncertainty through supply and demand. Traders may weight recent satellite imagery, historical Shanghai weather patterns, or seasonal anomalies differently than official forecasters, causing odds to shift as new information emerges. Both sources offer value: analysts provide scientific rigor, while markets reveal what informed participants actually believe will occur.

On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling shares of outcome contracts, with each share worth $0.01 to $1.00 depending on implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market uses an automated market maker (AMM) model, meaning prices adjust continuously based on trade flow and liquidity depth. Contracts representing cooler temperatures may trade at different prices than those for warmer ranges, reflecting the crowd's belief about which outcome is most likely. As July 9 approaches, prices typically tighten around the most probable outcome.

This market resolves around Jul 9, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 9 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data, typically reported by China's national weather service or internationally recognized weather stations operating in Shanghai. Winning contracts are those whose temperature ranges contain the verified low; all other contracts expire worthless. Resolution usually occurs within hours of the market end date once the final reading is confirmed.

Major weather pattern shifts, tropical cyclone activity in East Asia, or updated seasonal forecasts from meteorological agencies could significantly move odds. Real-time satellite imagery showing unexpected atmospheric changes, sudden shifts in jet stream positioning, or anomalous sea-surface temperatures in nearby regions may trigger trader repositioning. As July 9 approaches, each daily weather update narrows uncertainty and can cause sharp repricing. Additionally, historical Shanghai temperature records or unusual climate events elsewhere in China may influence how traders assess tail-risk scenarios for extreme heat or cold.
