Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate trader sentiment, historical accuracy, and real-time information flows. While weather analysts rely on numerical models and atmospheric data, this market aggregates the views of many participants betting real money on the outcome. Comparing the odds here to published forecasts from Shanghai's meteorological bureau or international weather services can reveal where traders see upside or downside risk. Such comparisons help identify whether the market is pricing in uncertainty that official models may underweight or overweight.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares that represent different temperature outcomes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share pays out based on whether the actual lowest temperature matches the specified range. The price of each outcome reflects the collective probability estimate—higher prices indicate traders view that outcome as more likely. As new information emerges or trading volume shifts, prices adjust continuously, allowing participants to enter or exit positions throughout the market's lifetime.
This market resolves around Jul 5, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 5 becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual minimum temperature to the specified threshold in the market's terms. Resolution typically occurs within hours or a day after the event, once official weather data is published and confirmed. Traders' positions settle based on whether the real-world temperature aligns with their predicted outcome.
Weather forecasts updated by meteorological agencies can significantly shift odds as new atmospheric models become available. Seasonal climate patterns, unexpected weather systems, or anomalies reported in the days leading up to July 5 may trigger rapid repricing. Historical temperature records for Shanghai in early July provide a baseline; any indication of unusual conditions could move traders to adjust positions. Additionally, major weather news or alerts from regional forecasters can prompt sudden trading activity and price swings in this market.
