Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Shanghai July 2 temperature market dashboard displays real-time odds and historical price movements for predictions on the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 2. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the dashboard reflects current market prices, 24-hour trading volume, and cumulative liquidity across all outcome categories. This live data helps participants monitor how market sentiment shifts as new weather forecasts and atmospheric data emerge, giving a transparent view of collective expectations for that specific day's minimum temperature in Shanghai.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, uncertainty premiums, and non-expert participation alongside professional analysis. While meteorologists publish deterministic or probabilistic temperature ranges based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Comparing the implied probability from market odds to the confidence intervals published by weather agencies can reveal whether traders are pricing in more or less risk than experts expect, though both sources ultimately depend on the same underlying atmospheric conditions and model outputs.

On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range outcome has its own share price, which moves based on order flow and liquidity depth. As traders accumulate positions, the cost to buy additional shares in a given outcome rises, and the cost to sell falls, creating a continuous price discovery mechanism. The odds displayed reflect the current equilibrium price across all outcomes, with the sum of all outcome probabilities equaling 100 percent.

This market resolves around Jul 2, 2026, once July 2 has passed and the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai that day is verifiable from credible public reporting. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual minimum temperature to the predefined range brackets offered in the market. Winning shares are those corresponding to the range that contains the verified temperature reading. Resolution occurs after sufficient time has elapsed for official meteorological data to be published and confirmed, ensuring accuracy and preventing disputes.

Major weather model updates, tropical storm or typhoon forecasts affecting East Asia, and seasonal atmospheric anomalies can significantly shift odds in this market. Real-time satellite imagery, upper-atmosphere pressure patterns, and official meteorological agency advisories often trigger sharp repricing as traders reassess the probability of extreme or mild conditions. Additionally, historical temperature records for July 2 in Shanghai and broader climate trends may influence longer-term positioning. As the event date approaches, intraday weather reports and final model consensus typically drive the most volatile trading activity.
