Prediction market odds and traditional weather analyst forecasts often diverge because they operate on different timescales and incentive structures. Meteorologists issue deterministic point forecasts or narrow ranges based on atmospheric models, while traders in this market price uncertainty across a wider spectrum of outcomes. Market odds tend to reflect real-money conviction and update faster as new data arrives, whereas analyst forecasts may lag by hours or days. Comparing the two reveals whether the crowd is pricing in more or less downside risk than official models suggest, offering traders an alternative lens on temperature expectations.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader buy and sell orders into real-time odds for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Shares representing lower or higher temperature ranges trade at prices reflecting their perceived likelihood, with the sum of all outcome prices equaling one dollar. As traders accumulate positions, the price curve adjusts to balance supply and demand. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market stays liquid and responsive to new information throughout the trading window.
This market resolves around Jul 13, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 13 becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final reported minimum temperature against the predefined outcome brackets offered in the market. Traders holding shares in the correct temperature range receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day, pending confirmation of official temperature data.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases are the primary drivers of price movement in this market. Tropical systems, monsoon intensity changes, or unexpected cold fronts can dramatically alter expectations for the day's low. Additionally, revisions to long-range models or sudden shifts in regional pressure systems often trigger sharp repricing. Traders also react to historical temperature anomalies and any official weather alerts issued by Chinese meteorological authorities. The closer the event date, the more precise and stable the market odds typically become as uncertainty narrows.
