Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, uncertainty premiums, and information asymmetries. While meteorologists publish deterministic point forecasts or confidence intervals based on numerical models, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Analysts may issue a single best estimate, whereas traders here express a full probability distribution across temperature bands. Over time, markets tend to outperform individual forecasts when participants have access to diverse information and proper incentive alignment, though both approaches have merit depending on your use case.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker (AMM) model where traders buy and sell outcome shares directly against a liquidity pool. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each temperature outcome reflects the ratio of shares in the pool, so larger trades move the odds more dramatically than small ones. Traders profit by buying underpriced outcomes and selling overpriced ones, gradually pushing prices toward their true probability. Transaction costs and slippage depend on pool depth and trade size, incentivizing efficient price discovery as new weather information becomes available.
This market resolves around Jun 15, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in Paris on June 15 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final temperature reading against the predefined brackets offered in the market. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome bracket receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day, allowing rapid settlement and payout distribution to winning participants.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases are the primary catalysts for price movement in this market. Large-scale weather systems—such as cold fronts, high-pressure ridges, or unusual jet stream configurations—can dramatically alter temperature expectations days or weeks in advance. Short-term model consensus changes, especially from high-resolution forecasts issued 5–10 days before June 15, often trigger sharp repricing. Additionally, historical temperature anomalies for that date and any unusual climate events in the preceding weeks may influence trader positioning and volatility.
