Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they reflect real-money incentives and continuous price discovery rather than point estimates. While meteorologists issue deterministic low-temperature predictions based on model consensus, this market aggregates the beliefs of traders who profit or lose based on accuracy. Comparing the implied probability of a 62–63°F low on this market to the confidence intervals published by the National Weather Service or private forecasters can reveal where traders see value or risk that analysts may have underweighted. These differences highlight how markets and expert opinion can complement each other in understanding uncertainty.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker (AMM) model where traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature outcomes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as the 62–63°F range—has a share price between 0 and 1 that reflects the collective probability assigned by the market. As traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price rises; selling pushes it lower. The current odds reflect the balance of capital deployed across all temperature bands, creating a dynamic price that adjusts continuously as new information arrives and trader conviction shifts.
This market resolves around Jul 6, 2026, once the lowest temperature recorded in New York City for July 6 is verified and confirmed. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual low temperature to the specified range—in this case, whether it falls between 62–63°F or outside that band. Resolution relies on credible public weather data sources to establish the final temperature reading. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. The exact timing of resolution depends on when official temperature data becomes available and the platform processes the settlement.
Several factors can shift odds in this market before Jul 6, 2026. Updated weather models—particularly those released 7–10 days before the event—often trigger significant repricing as forecasters refine their predictions. Major atmospheric patterns, such as the approach of a cold front or high-pressure system, can alter expectations for the low temperature. Real-time conditions on July 5 and early July 6 will also influence late trading as traders react to actual weather unfolding. Additionally, any unusual seasonal anomalies or heat waves affecting the broader Northeast region could move sentiment. Traders monitor these signals continuously to adjust positions and capture value before the market settles.
