Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Wellington temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for contracts tied to the highest temperature forecast in Wellington on June 28. Traders buy and sell shares based on their conviction about whether the peak will hit specific temperature thresholds. The dashboard displays current implied probabilities, historical price movements, and liquidity depth, giving participants a live window into how the market is pricing this weather outcome as new information emerges.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they reflect real-money incentives and collective trader judgment rather than a single model. While weather analysts publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market aggregates the views of many participants with skin in the game. Comparing the implied probability here to official forecasts from New Zealand's national weather service can reveal whether traders are pricing in tail risks or consensus that analysts may underweight or overlook.

On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker that converts buy and sell orders into real-time odds. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each contract represents a binary outcome—for instance, whether the high will be exactly 11°C—and the price of that contract reflects the probability traders assign to it. As new weather data, forecasts, or seasonal patterns emerge, traders adjust their positions, moving the price up or down to reflect fresh conviction about the outcome.

This market resolves around Jun 28, 2026, once June 28 has passed and the highest temperature recorded in Wellington is confirmed. The outcome is determined by verified weather data from credible public sources, ensuring that the result reflects the actual meteorological event. Traders who correctly predicted the temperature range will receive their winnings based on the final settlement price.

Several factors can shift trader positioning before resolution. Updated seasonal forecasts, changes in atmospheric pressure systems, or anomalous ocean temperatures affecting Wellington's microclimate may prompt repricing. Major weather pattern shifts—such as an unexpected cold front or warm air mass—can trigger rapid moves in implied probabilities. Additionally, historical temperature records for late June and real-time weather alerts in the days leading up to June 28 will likely influence how traders adjust their bets on the final high.
