Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning and incentives to be accurate. While meteorologists rely on atmospheric models and historical data, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants risking capital on the outcome. Analysts may issue a single point estimate or range, whereas traders here express confidence through their willingness to buy or sell at specific odds. Over time, markets have proven competitive with or superior to expert forecasts on many weather events, though both approaches have merit and can complement each other.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature bracket has its own contract, and the price of a share reflects the market's implied probability of that outcome occurring. As traders accumulate positions, the AMM adjusts prices to balance supply and demand. The sum of all outcome probabilities across temperature ranges equals 100 percent, ensuring internal consistency. Higher prices signal stronger collective confidence in a particular temperature range.
This market resolves around Jun 18, 2026, after June 18 has passed and the highest temperature recorded in Wellington that day is confirmed. The outcome is determined by verified data from credible public weather sources, ensuring an objective and transparent settlement. Once the official high temperature is published, the contract corresponding to the correct range pays out to holders, and all other outcomes expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours or a day after the event, depending on data availability and platform processing.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and atmospheric anomalies can significantly move odds in this market. Tropical cyclones, cold fronts, or heat waves affecting the region would prompt traders to reassess probabilities. Real-time weather model updates and official meteorological warnings often trigger rapid repricing. Historical temperature records and climate data comparisons also influence trader behavior. As June 18 approaches, intraday forecasts and live weather observations will increasingly dominate trading activity, with final price movements reflecting the most current atmospheric conditions and expert predictions.
