Prediction market odds on Polymarket reflect real-money bets from traders and can differ meaningfully from traditional meteorological forecasts. While weather analysts issue deterministic temperature predictions based on atmospheric models, prediction markets aggregate diverse trader beliefs into probabilistic odds. Markets often incorporate late-breaking weather data and shift rapidly as new information emerges. Comparing market-implied probabilities to official forecasts from the New Zealand MetService can reveal where traders see upside or downside risk relative to expert consensus.
On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. On Polymarket, the highest temperature in Wellington on June 10 is priced through outcome contracts representing discrete temperature ranges or specific thresholds. Traders buy and sell shares in each outcome, with prices reflecting the probability of that outcome occurring. The market uses an automated market maker or order-book mechanism to determine prices based on supply and demand. As traders adjust positions based on weather forecasts and real-time conditions, prices shift to reflect evolving market sentiment about the likely peak temperature.
The market resolves on Jun 10, 2026, after the highest temperature in Wellington on June 10, 2026, has been recorded and finalized. The outcome is determined by the official maximum temperature reading for that day from the designated weather station or meteorological authority in Wellington. Once the data is confirmed and reported, the winning outcome contract is settled and traders receive payouts based on their positions. Resolution occurs shortly after the close of the trading day on June 10.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric conditions will drive price movements. Tropical cyclone activity, high-pressure systems, or cold fronts approaching New Zealand in early June could significantly alter expectations. Official long-range forecasts from MetService or international weather models released closer to the date will influence trader positioning. Unusual climate anomalies or El Niño/La Niña updates may also shift market odds. As June 10 approaches, daily weather updates and short-range forecasts will create volatility in the final trading days.
