Prediction market odds on Polymarket reflect real-money bets from traders and often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts. While weather analysts issue point estimates and confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, prediction markets aggregate dispersed information and incentivize accuracy through financial stakes. Comparing the market's implied temperature distribution to official forecasts from New Zealand's MetService can reveal whether traders are pricing in tail risks, model uncertainty, or recent weather pattern shifts that analysts may weight differently.
On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. On Polymarket, the highest temperature in Wellington on June 1 is priced through outcome contracts representing discrete temperature ranges or specific thresholds. Traders buy and sell shares in each outcome, with prices reflecting the probability of that temperature band occurring. The market uses an automated market maker or order-book mechanism to determine prices based on supply and demand. As new weather data, seasonal patterns, or climate anomalies emerge, prices adjust continuously until the market resolves on Jun 1, 2026.
The market resolves on Jun 1, 2026, which corresponds to the end of June 1 in Wellington. The outcome is determined by the official highest temperature recorded in Wellington on that calendar day. Resolution relies on verified meteorological data from authoritative sources to settle all outcome contracts. Traders should monitor the specific resolution criteria and data source designated by the market to understand which temperature reading will be used to determine winners and losers.
Several factors could shift market odds for Wellington's June 1 high temperature. Major weather pattern changes, such as shifts in the Southern Hemisphere jet stream or development of high-pressure systems over New Zealand, would alter expectations. Updated seasonal forecasts from meteorological agencies, El Niño or La Niña phase transitions, and real-time atmospheric data closer to June 1 all influence trader positioning. Additionally, historical temperature records for that date and any unusual climate anomalies reported in the weeks leading up to the event could prompt repricing as traders adjust their probability estimates.
