Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Wellington temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Wellington on July 4. The interface displays the current probability estimate alongside historical price movements, allowing traders to monitor how sentiment shifts as new weather data emerges. You can view order flow, recent trades, and cumulative volume to understand market depth and liquidity. This dashboard gives you a live window into how the prediction community is pricing temperature outcomes in this specific location and timeframe.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they aggregate real-time trader conviction rather than relying on a single model or analyst view. While weather services publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market reflects the collective judgment of participants who have financial incentive to be accurate. Traders may weight recent observations, ensemble model disagreement, or seasonal patterns differently than official forecasters. Comparing the odds here to published forecasts from New Zealand's national weather service can reveal where the market sees additional uncertainty or confidence that traditional models may not fully capture.

On Polymarket, traders buy and sell shares representing binary outcomes—in this case, whether the highest temperature will be 8°C or below on July 4. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each share reflects the probability traders assign to that outcome, with the two sides summing to 100 percent. As new information arrives—updated forecasts, seasonal data, or real-time weather patterns—traders adjust their positions, moving the price up or down. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market stays responsive to changing conditions and new evidence right up until resolution.

This market resolves around Jul 4, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Wellington on July 4 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual recorded high temperature against the threshold specified in the market contract. Traders' positions settle based on whether the real-world temperature observation matches the outcome they backed. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day, once official meteorological data is published and confirmed.

Several factors can shift odds significantly before Jul 4, 2026. Updated seasonal forecasts or long-range weather models showing warmer or cooler patterns will influence trader positioning. Real-time atmospheric conditions—pressure systems, wind patterns, or moisture levels—often trigger repricing as meteorologists refine their near-term predictions. Major weather events or anomalies in the Southern Hemisphere during the lead-up period may also sway sentiment. Additionally, historical temperature records for Wellington in early July and any unusual climate patterns reported in the media can prompt traders to reassess their probability estimates and adjust their bets accordingly.
