Frequently asked questions

The Wellington temperature market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Wellington on July 12. Traders buy and sell shares based on their predictions of whether the peak temperature will reach specific thresholds. The dashboard displays current market prices, historical price movements, and 24-hour volume to help participants monitor sentiment and liquidity. This market reflects collective forecasting by traders who analyze weather models, seasonal patterns, and historical data to inform their positions. By observing price shifts, you can gauge how market participants are adjusting their expectations as new meteorological information emerges.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and incentives absent from analyst models. While weather bureaus rely on numerical weather prediction systems and historical climatology, this market aggregates the distributed knowledge of participants who profit or lose based on accuracy. Traders may weight recent atmospheric patterns, ensemble model consensus, or local microclimatic factors differently than official forecasters. Over time, prediction markets have demonstrated competitive accuracy against expert predictions in many domains. Comparing the current odds to published forecasts from meteorological agencies can reveal where market participants see opportunities or risks that analysts may have underweighted.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader orders into real-time odds. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as whether the highest temperature will be 8°C—is represented as a separate contract with a price between 0 and 1 reflecting its implied probability. When traders buy shares predicting a specific temperature outcome, the price rises; selling pressure lowers it. The spread between bid and ask prices reflects current liquidity and uncertainty. As new weather data or forecasts emerge, traders adjust positions, causing prices to shift dynamically. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective expectations about Wellington's peak temperature on the event date.

This market resolves around Jul 12, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Wellington on July 12 is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual meteorological data against the specific temperature thresholds defined in each contract. Traders who correctly predicted the final temperature range receive their winnings, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours or days after the event, pending official data publication. The market's integrity depends on transparent, independently verifiable temperature measurements from recognized weather monitoring stations in Wellington.

Major weather model updates, seasonal climate anomalies, and atmospheric pressure systems can significantly shift odds in this market. Publication of long-range forecasts from meteorological agencies often triggers repricing as traders incorporate new data. Unusual ocean temperatures, El Niño or La Niña patterns, and historical temperature records for July in Wellington may influence trader positioning. Real-time weather alerts, frontal systems approaching the region, or unexpected atmospheric blocking patterns can cause sharp price movements. As July 12 approaches, high-resolution forecast models become more reliable, typically narrowing the range of plausible outcomes and reducing uncertainty. Breaking news about extreme weather events elsewhere in New Zealand or the Southern Hemisphere may also prompt traders to reassess regional temperature expectations.
