Prediction market odds reflect real-money bets from traders and often incorporate a broader range of information than traditional weather forecasts alone. While meteorologists publish point estimates and confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the views of many participants who have financial incentive to be accurate. Comparing the implied probability from market prices to official forecasts can reveal where traders see upside or downside risk. Both sources are valuable: analysts offer detailed reasoning, while markets distill that reasoning into a single probability that updates continuously.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares of each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share reflects the collective belief in that outcome's likelihood, ranging from near-zero to near-certain. When you buy a share at a lower price, you profit if that outcome occurs; selling at a higher price locks in gains if sentiment shifts. The automated market maker adjusts prices based on order flow, ensuring liquidity and continuous pricing throughout the trading period.
This market resolves around Jun 17, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Tokyo on that date is confirmed. The outcome is verified against credible public sources that document official weather measurements. Traders holding shares in the correct temperature range receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. The resolution process is automatic once the data is finalized, ensuring all participants see the same result.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can all influence trading activity in this market. Tropical systems, high-pressure systems, or unexpected cold fronts moving toward Japan would trigger repricing. Official meteorological updates and long-range model consensus changes often spark trading surges. As June 17 approaches, actual daily temperatures in the preceding week provide strong signals about local conditions, typically driving the largest price moves in the final days before resolution.
