Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because traders incorporate real-time data, model uncertainty, and collective expectations into their pricing. While weather agencies publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Analyst predictions tend to narrow confidence intervals closer to the event, whereas market odds may reflect broader uncertainty or tail-risk pricing. Comparing the two reveals whether traders are pricing in more or less extreme outcomes than official forecasts suggest.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range has its own contract, and the combined probability of all outcomes sums to 100 percent. As traders place orders, the price of each outcome adjusts based on supply and demand. Higher trading activity typically narrows spreads and improves price discovery, while lower volume can widen the gap between bid and ask prices for less-traded outcomes.
This market resolves around Jul 9, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Tokyo on July 9 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data reported for that specific date and location. Resolution occurs after the event window closes and the final temperature reading is confirmed. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome range receive their payout proportionally.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can significantly move this market. Tropical systems, heat waves, or cold fronts approaching Japan will trigger repricing as traders adjust their positions. Official meteorological agency updates and model consensus changes often spark trading surges. Additionally, historical temperature anomalies for early July and broader climate trends may influence longer-term positioning. As July 9 approaches, intraday weather updates and final forecast consensus typically drive the most volatile price swings.
