Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Shanghai temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Shanghai on June 17. Traders buy and sell shares based on their belief about whether the day's peak will fall at or below specific thresholds. The interface displays current market prices, historical price movements, and liquidity depth, allowing participants to monitor how sentiment shifts as new weather data and forecasts emerge. This live pricing reflects the collective prediction of all active traders on the platform.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment, risk appetite, and information beyond official weather models. While meteorologists issue deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric science, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial stakes in the outcome. Traders may weight recent data, historical patterns, or model uncertainty differently than published forecasts do. Comparing the implied probability here to consensus analyst predictions can reveal where the crowd sees asymmetric risk or information advantage.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker that adjusts prices based on buy and sell pressure. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on a specific temperature outcome, and the price reflects the probability the market assigns to that event occurring. As more traders buy shares predicting cooler or warmer conditions, the price moves to balance supply and demand. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market stays responsive to new information and shifting expectations throughout the trading window.

This market resolves around Jun 17, 2026, after the highest temperature in Shanghai on June 17 is recorded and verified. The outcome is confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting, such as official meteorological records or established weather data providers. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. The resolution process is automated once the data is finalized, ensuring all participants receive results simultaneously.

Major weather model updates, seasonal pattern shifts, and atmospheric pressure systems over East Asia can significantly move prices in this market. Real-time satellite imagery, upper-air data releases, and official meteorological authority forecasts often trigger sharp repricing as traders reassess the likelihood of extreme heat. Unexpected climate anomalies, urban heat island effects, or pollution events in Shanghai could also influence outcomes. As June 17 approaches, intraday temperature readings and final 24-hour forecasts typically drive the most volatile trading activity.
