Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorologist forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning and risk appetite alongside scientific models. While weather analysts publish point estimates and confidence intervals based on atmospheric data, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Comparing the two reveals whether traders are pricing in more or less uncertainty than official forecasts suggest, and whether consensus leans toward higher or lower temperatures than expert consensus. This divergence can highlight overlooked risks or overconfidence in either approach.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling shares corresponding to different temperature ranges or outcomes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on a specific outcome, and the market price reflects the collective probability assigned by active traders. As new information arrives—updated weather models, seasonal patterns, or real-time atmospheric conditions—traders adjust their bids and asks, moving prices to reflect fresh expectations. The continuous price discovery process ensures that odds remain responsive to changing conditions throughout the trading window.
This market resolves around Jun 15, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai on June 15 is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data, typically published by China's national weather service or recognized international weather databases. Resolution occurs after the trading window closes and sufficient time has passed for final temperature readings to be officially recorded and validated. Traders should monitor official announcements to understand the exact timing and data source used for settlement.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases are primary catalysts for price movement in this market. Tropical storm activity, monsoon timing, or unexpected heat waves in the region can trigger rapid repricing as traders reassess tail risks. Historical temperature anomalies, El Niño or La Niña developments, and medium-range forecast updates from meteorological agencies also influence trader positioning. As June 15 approaches, intraday weather updates and short-term model consensus will likely drive increased volatility and trading volume.
