Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Shanghai temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and historical price movements for predictions on the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 9. The interface displays current market pricing, 24-hour trading volume, and outcome probabilities as traders buy and sell shares. This live data reflects collective market sentiment about whether the peak temperature will fall within specific ranges. The dashboard also shows order-book depth and recent trade history, giving participants visibility into liquidity and price discovery across all temperature brackets available for this event.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning, risk appetite, and information flow beyond meteorological models alone. While meteorologists rely on atmospheric data and historical patterns, this market aggregates the collective judgment of participants who have financial incentive to forecast accurately. Analyst consensus may lag market repricing when new weather data emerges or when traders identify systematic bias in official forecasts. Comparing the two can reveal whether the market is pricing in tail risks or confidence levels that traditional forecasters have not emphasized.

On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature bracket has its own contract, and the price of a share reflects the probability implied by the current supply and demand. As traders accumulate positions, the cost to buy additional shares in that outcome rises, and the cost to sell falls. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market remains responsive to new information and trader conviction about Shanghai's weather on July 9.

This market resolves around Jul 9, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 9 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data reported by recognized weather agencies covering that date. Traders holding shares in the correct temperature bracket receive their payout once the event is confirmed and the platform settles all positions. Resolution typically occurs within hours or days of the event, depending on data availability and platform processing.

Major weather pattern shifts, tropical storm formation, or unexpected atmospheric anomalies could significantly reprrice this market. Updated seasonal forecasts from meteorological agencies, changes in ocean temperatures, or shifts in monsoon intensity may trigger trader repositioning. Real-time weather alerts and radar data released in the days leading up to July 9 will likely drive sharp price movements as new information becomes available. Additionally, historical temperature records for Shanghai and any unusual climate events in the region could influence trader expectations and shift the implied probability distribution across temperature outcomes.
