Frequently asked questions

The Shanghai temperature prediction market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Shanghai on July 7. Traders buy and sell shares based on their belief about whether the day's peak will reach specific thresholds. The interface displays current odds, historical price movements, and liquidity depth, allowing participants to monitor how market sentiment evolves as the event date approaches. This transparent price discovery mechanism reflects the collective expectations of all active traders.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader conviction and financial incentives. While meteorologists publish deterministic temperature ranges based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the distributed knowledge of participants who have money at stake. Comparing the odds here to published analyst forecasts reveals whether the crowd is pricing in more or less risk than official models suggest. Both sources offer value: analysts provide scientific rigor, while markets reflect dynamic, incentivized judgment.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker that adjusts prices based on buy and sell volume. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each share represents a claim on a specific temperature outcome, and the current price reflects the probability implied by recent trades. As more capital flows into one outcome, its price rises and the competing outcome falls. This continuous repricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and trader sentiment shifts right up until resolution.

This market resolves around Jul 7, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai for that day is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by the actual meteorological reading, not by trader opinion or interim forecasts. Resolution typically occurs within hours of market close, allowing payouts to be processed promptly. Participants should monitor official weather station data as the event date approaches to assess their positions.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can significantly move odds in this market. Tropical systems, heat waves, or cold fronts affecting East Asia may trigger sharp repricing as traders adjust their bets. Additionally, historical temperature records for July 7 in Shanghai and recent years' heat trends influence trader positioning. As the event date nears, intraday weather updates and satellite imagery often drive final volatility, making the last 48 hours particularly active.
