Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Shanghai temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for contracts tied to the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 6. The interface displays the current price of the leading outcome—whether the peak temperature will reach 28°C—alongside historical price movements and liquidity depth. Traders use this data to monitor how market sentiment shifts as the event date approaches, with odds updating continuously as new positions are placed and existing ones are closed.

Prediction market odds reflect the aggregated beliefs of traders willing to stake real capital, whereas traditional analyst forecasts rely on meteorological models and expert judgment. This market's odds can diverge from official weather service predictions because traders factor in broader uncertainty, historical volatility, and their own risk assessments. When meteorologists issue a forecast for Shanghai's July 6 temperature, comparing it to the market odds reveals whether traders are pricing in more or less confidence than the experts—a useful signal of where consensus may be shifting.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares in outcome contracts, with the price of each share reflecting the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The leading contract—whether the highest temperature will be 28°C on July 6—trades at a price that converts directly to a percentage likelihood. As traders adjust their positions based on new information or changing views, the price moves, allowing both speculators and hedgers to enter or exit at market rates.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, or significant atmospheric events in East Asia could substantially move odds in this market. Real-time weather alerts, tropical storm developments, or heat wave warnings issued by meteorological agencies often trigger sharp repricing as traders adjust their exposure. Additionally, historical temperature records for Shanghai in early July and any anomalous climate data released before the event date may influence trader positioning. Closer to Jul 6, 2026, hourly forecasts and live weather updates typically drive the most volatile price swings.
