Prediction market odds reflect aggregated trader expectations and often diverge from traditional weather forecasts issued by meteorological agencies. While professional meteorologists rely on atmospheric models and historical data, this market incorporates real-time information and trader conviction through price discovery. Comparing the implied probability from market odds to published forecasts can reveal where traders see upside or downside risk relative to expert consensus. Significant gaps between the two may signal either market inefficiency or emerging data that analysts have not yet fully incorporated into their models.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an order-book mechanism where buy and sell orders determine the odds for each outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market displays the probability of the highest temperature reaching specific thresholds, with prices fluctuating based on supply and demand. Participants can view the current bid-ask spread and execute trades at posted prices or place limit orders to wait for their target entry points. Liquidity and trading volume directly influence how tightly prices cluster around fair value.
This market resolves around Jul 5, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 5 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data reported for that specific date and location. Resolution occurs after the event window closes and the final temperature reading is confirmed, allowing the platform to settle all positions based on the actual result. Traders should monitor official weather reporting channels as the date approaches to anticipate likely outcomes.
Updated weather forecasts from meteorological agencies can significantly shift market odds as new atmospheric data becomes available. Seasonal climate patterns, El Niño or La Niña conditions, and historical temperature records for Shanghai in early July all influence trader expectations. Real-time weather alerts, heat wave warnings, or unexpected atmospheric changes in the days leading up to July 5 may trigger sharp repricing. As the event date approaches, intraday temperature trends and overnight lows can also prompt traders to adjust positions based on emerging conditions.
