Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Shanghai July 12 temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature forecast in Shanghai on that date. The interface displays current market prices, historical price movements, and 24-hour volume to help traders monitor sentiment around whether temperatures will reach specific thresholds. This market aggregates predictions from traders worldwide who are pricing in weather models, seasonal patterns, and historical climate data for Shanghai in mid-July. The dashboard updates continuously as new trades execute, giving you a live snapshot of collective market expectations for that day's peak temperature.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and incentives absent from static models. While meteorologists publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market prices in broader uncertainty and the possibility of tail events. Traders betting on specific temperature outcomes are financially motivated to incorporate the latest satellite imagery, ensemble models, and local knowledge. Over time, prediction markets have shown competitive accuracy against expert forecasts, particularly when liquidity is robust and the event is sufficiently far in the future to allow price discovery.

On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader orders into real-time odds. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as whether the highest temperature will fall within a specific range—is represented as a separate contract, and the sum of all outcome prices equals one dollar. As traders buy or sell contracts, the price adjusts algorithmically to reflect new information and shifting expectations. This mechanism ensures continuous pricing and allows you to enter or exit positions at transparent, market-determined rates throughout the trading window.

This market resolves around Jul 12, 2026, once July 12 has passed and the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai that day is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual peak temperature against the specific thresholds defined in each contract. Once the event is confirmed through reliable meteorological or weather reporting, the market settles automatically and traders receive payouts based on which outcome occurred. All positions are final at that point, and no further trading is permitted.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, or unexpected atmospheric systems could significantly move prices in this market. Tropical cyclones, heat waves, or cold fronts approaching Shanghai would trigger rapid repricing as traders adjust their expectations. Real-time weather model updates and satellite data releases often spark trading activity, especially as the event date approaches. Additionally, historical temperature records for Shanghai in early July and any unusual climate anomalies reported in the region could influence trader positioning. As Jul 12, 2026 draws nearer, intraday weather updates and local news coverage typically increase volatility and trading volume.
