Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, risk appetite, and information asymmetries. While weather analysts rely on physics-based models and historical data, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Comparing the implied probability here to official forecasts from China's meteorological authority or international weather services can reveal where traders are more bullish or bearish. Such gaps sometimes signal underpriced or overpriced outcomes relative to expert consensus.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker (AMM) mechanism, where buying and selling pressure directly moves the price. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—temperature ranges or specific thresholds—has a share price between 0 and 100 cents, representing the implied probability. As traders accumulate positions, the cost to buy or sell additional shares increases or decreases, ensuring continuous price discovery. This mechanism rewards early accurate forecasters and punishes those who misjudge the event.
This market resolves around Jul 11, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Shanghai on July 11 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual meteorological data against the predefined temperature brackets or thresholds established at market creation. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day, once official temperature readings are confirmed.
Major weather model updates, especially from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts or the U.S. National Weather Service, often trigger sharp repricing as traders adjust their positions. Seasonal climate anomalies, atmospheric pressure systems, and tropical cyclone activity in the Western Pacific can shift long-range forecasts significantly. Real-time satellite imagery and local weather alerts in the days immediately before July 11 typically drive the most volatile trading. Additionally, any unusual urban heat island effects or pollution events reported in Shanghai may influence trader expectations and market odds.
