Prediction market odds and traditional weather analyst forecasts often diverge because they operate on different timescales and incentive structures. Meteorologists issue deterministic forecasts based on atmospheric models, while traders in this market are pricing probabilistic outcomes with real money at stake. As the event date approaches, market odds typically converge toward official forecasts as new data reduces uncertainty. However, early in the trading window, market prices may reflect longer-term climate patterns or seasonal trends that analysts haven't yet incorporated. Comparing the two can reveal where traders see value relative to expert consensus.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds for this market through an automated market maker that adjusts prices based on buy and sell pressure. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each contract represents a specific temperature outcome, and the price of a share reflects the collective probability assigned by all active traders. When more traders buy shares predicting a certain temperature range, the price of those shares rises, signaling higher confidence. Conversely, selling pressure lowers prices. This continuous price discovery mechanism means the market odds update in real time as new information emerges or trader sentiment shifts.
This market resolves around Jul 7, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Seoul on July 7 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual weather data against the temperature thresholds embedded in each contract. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. The resolution process is automated once the official temperature reading is confirmed, ensuring a transparent and timely settlement for all participants.
Several factors can shift odds in this market before resolution. Updated weather models and seasonal forecasts from meteorological agencies often trigger repricing as traders incorporate new data. Major weather systems—such as approaching typhoons, heat domes, or cold fronts—can significantly alter temperature expectations. Real-time atmospheric conditions in the days leading up to July 7 will drive late trading activity. Additionally, historical temperature records and climate anomalies for Seoul in early July may influence trader positioning. As the event date nears, each new forecast update or weather alert typically produces measurable price movement.
