Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment and broader uncertainty. While meteorologists issue point estimates or ranges based on atmospheric models, this market reflects the aggregated beliefs of participants who have financial incentives to forecast accurately. Analyst predictions tend to narrow as the event date approaches and models improve, whereas market odds can shift rapidly based on new trades. Both sources offer value: analysts provide scientific rigor, while markets capture dynamic, crowd-sourced probability assessments that may highlight risks analysts underweight.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range has its own contract, and the price of each share reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As traders place orders, the market automatically adjusts prices to maintain equilibrium. Higher prices indicate outcomes traders view as more likely, while lower prices suggest less probable scenarios. This continuous price discovery mechanism ensures the market remains responsive to new information and trader conviction.
This market resolves around Jul 9, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Seattle on July 9 is verifiable from credible public reporting. The outcome is determined by comparing actual meteorological data against the temperature ranges defined in each contract. Whichever range contains the verified high temperature becomes the winning outcome, and traders holding shares in that contract receive their payout. Resolution typically occurs within hours or a day after the event, once official records are published and confirmed.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and atmospheric anomalies can significantly move this market. Tropical systems, heat domes, or sudden cold fronts affecting the Pacific Northwest would trigger rapid repricing. Real-time weather model updates released by meteorological agencies often spark trading activity as participants adjust their positions. Media coverage of extreme weather warnings or climate events can also shift trader sentiment. As July 9 approaches, intraday weather updates and live conditions on the day itself will drive final price movements, with the market becoming increasingly sensitive to minute-by-minute forecasts.
