Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they aggregate real-time trader sentiment and financial incentives rather than relying solely on meteorological models. While professional meteorologists publish point estimates and confidence intervals, this market reflects what thousands of traders collectively believe will occur, factoring in uncertainty and tail risks. Comparing the leading outcome here to official National Weather Service or similar analyst predictions can reveal whether the crowd is pricing in more or less volatility than experts expect. Both sources offer value: analysts provide technical rigor, while markets capture dynamic, incentive-driven consensus.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through an automated market maker that converts trader orders into real-time odds for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the price of each share reflects the collective probability assigned by the market. As more capital flows into a particular outcome, its price rises and others fall, creating a continuous price discovery mechanism. The spread between bid and ask prices tightens as volume increases, making it cheaper to trade larger positions during peak activity.
This market resolves around Jul 12, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in San Francisco on July 12 is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official weather station data for that specific date, with the winning bracket or outcome determined by which temperature range the actual high falls into. Traders should monitor weather forecasts and real-time conditions as the date approaches, since any significant shift in the forecast can move market prices sharply. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the market close once the final temperature is officially recorded.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data will drive significant price swings in this market. If meteorologists issue revised predictions showing a heat wave or cooler-than-expected conditions, traders will reprrice outcomes accordingly. Unusual ocean temperatures, jet stream positioning, and historical analogues to past July 12 weather in San Francisco can all influence trader behavior. As the date draws closer, short-term forecasts become more reliable and volatile, often triggering sharp repricing in the final days. Breaking news about atmospheric conditions or climate anomalies may also trigger rapid trading activity.
