Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Qingdao temperature market dashboard displays real-time odds and historical price movement for predictions on the highest temperature recorded in Qingdao on June 30. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the dashboard shows current market prices, trading volume, and outcome probabilities. This reflects the collective forecast of market participants as they continuously update their positions based on weather models, seasonal patterns, and incoming meteorological data. The interface allows you to monitor how sentiment shifts as the event date approaches.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior and incentives alongside meteorological models. While official forecasters rely on physics-based climate simulations and historical data, this market aggregates the views of participants who have financial skin in the game. Analysts may publish point estimates or confidence intervals for June 30 conditions in Qingdao, but market prices reflect a broader range of opinion and can shift rapidly as new information emerges. Comparing the two reveals whether traders are pricing in more or less uncertainty than institutional forecasters.

On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker that determines odds based on the ratio of shares bought and sold for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more capital flows into a particular range—say, 28–30°C—the price of that outcome rises and others fall proportionally. This continuous repricing mechanism ensures the market remains liquid and responsive to new information. Traders profit by correctly predicting which range will verify, creating strong incentives for accurate forecasting.

This market resolves around Jun 30, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Qingdao on that date is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the official meteorological reading to the temperature ranges offered in the market. Whichever bracket contains the verified high temperature is declared correct, and traders holding shares in that outcome receive their payout. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day.

Weather model updates and seasonal forecasts are primary drivers of price movement in this market. Major atmospheric patterns—such as high-pressure systems, monsoon activity, or heat waves affecting East Asia—can shift trader expectations significantly. Real-time meteorological alerts and official weather warnings issued by Chinese authorities will likely trigger sharp repricing. Additionally, historical temperature records for Qingdao in late June and broader climate trends provide context that influences how traders assess the probability of extreme heat. As June 30 approaches, intraday forecasts become increasingly precise and can cause rapid volatility.
