Frequently asked questions

The NYC temperature forecast market on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for the highest temperature expected in New York City on June 30. The dashboard displays current pricing, historical price movements, and 24-hour trading volume, giving traders a live view of how the market is pricing different temperature outcomes. This allows participants to monitor consensus expectations and identify shifts in trader sentiment as new weather data and forecasts emerge leading up to the event date.

Prediction market odds reflect the aggregated beliefs of traders betting real money on outcomes, whereas traditional weather forecasts rely on meteorological models and expert analysis. This market prices the likelihood that the highest temperature will be 79°F or below, offering a market-based alternative to conventional forecasts. Traders often incorporate the latest National Weather Service data and seasonal patterns into their positions, creating a dynamic pricing mechanism that can diverge from static analyst predictions as conditions change.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker mechanism, with prices reflecting the collective assessment of temperature outcomes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each contract trades between 0 and 1, where the price represents the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As traders buy and sell positions based on new weather data or changing expectations, the market price adjusts in real time, ensuring that the odds remain responsive to new information throughout the trading period.

This market resolves around Jun 30, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. The resolution hinges on whether the highest temperature recorded in New York City on that date meets or falls below the specified threshold. Once the day concludes and official temperature data becomes available, the market settles based on which outcome occurred, and traders' positions are finalized accordingly.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can significantly influence trading activity in this market. Tropical systems, heat domes, or cold fronts approaching the Northeast would trigger rapid repricing as traders adjust their positions. Additionally, historical temperature records for late June and long-range climate models may prompt traders to reassess probabilities, while unexpected weather events or forecast revisions in the days immediately before June 30 could create sharp price movements as resolution approaches.
