Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-money incentives and continuous price discovery. While meteorologists issue deterministic forecasts based on atmospheric models, this market reflects traders' probabilistic assessments, which can shift rapidly as new data emerges or as market participants update their views. Comparing the implied probability from market prices to the confidence intervals published by the National Weather Service or other official forecasters can reveal whether traders are pricing in more or less uncertainty than experts publicly communicate.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range outcome is represented as a separate contract, and the price of each reflects the aggregate belief about its likelihood. As traders place orders, the AMM adjusts prices to maintain liquidity, so the current market price of any outcome directly represents its implied probability. Higher-priced outcomes signal stronger trader conviction that the day's high will fall within that range.
This market resolves around Jul 6, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in New York City on July 6 is verified and finalized. The outcome is confirmed against credible public sources reporting the official daily high, ensuring an objective and transparent settlement. Traders holding shares in the outcome bracket that matches the verified temperature receive their payout, while other positions expire worthless.
Weather model updates, seasonal climate patterns, and real-time atmospheric data releases can all shift trader expectations and move prices in this market. Major weather systems, heat waves, or unexpected cold fronts tracked by meteorologists may trigger sharp repricing as participants reassess probabilities. Additionally, historical temperature records for July 6 and broader climate trends can influence positioning. As the date approaches, intraday forecasts and live weather conditions will likely drive final price adjustments before the market settles.
