Prediction market odds reflect the collective judgment of traders with real money at stake, often incorporating faster-moving information than traditional meteorological models. Analyst forecasts from national weather services tend to be more conservative and updated on fixed schedules, whereas this market reprices continuously as new data arrives. Both sources offer value: analysts provide detailed methodology and uncertainty ranges, while prediction markets aggregate dispersed knowledge and incentivize accuracy through financial reward.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling shares tied to specific temperature outcomes. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome contract trades independently, with the combined probability of all outcomes summing to 100 percent. The market price of each share reflects the crowd's estimated likelihood of that temperature range occurring, and wider bid-ask spreads typically indicate greater uncertainty among traders about which outcome will materialize.
This market resolves around Jul 7, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Mexico City on July 7 becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual weather station readings against the predetermined temperature brackets offered in the market. Once the event concludes and official data is published, the winning outcome is confirmed and traders holding the correct shares receive their payout.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and atmospheric pressure anomalies can significantly shift trader expectations. El Niño or La Niña developments, volcanic activity affecting solar radiation, and real-time satellite imagery showing cloud cover changes all influence how traders price temperature outcomes. Additionally, historical July 7 temperature records and recent heat waves in the region serve as reference points; any unexpected climate event or revised meteorological model output may trigger rapid repricing as new information reaches the market.
