Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because traders incorporate real-time data, model uncertainty, and historical volatility differently than institutional weather services. While meteorologists publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on numerical weather models, this market aggregates decentralized trader beliefs and financial incentives. Comparing the implied probability from this market to published analyst confidence intervals can reveal whether traders are pricing in tail risks or consensus outcomes that official forecasts may underweight or overlook. Both sources offer value: analysts provide methodological rigor, while markets reflect dynamic, incentive-aligned expectations.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker mechanism, where each outcome range carries a fractional share price between 0 and 1. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Buying a share at a lower price and selling at a higher price generates profit if that outcome occurs. The market price reflects the collective willingness of traders to bet on specific temperature thresholds, with liquidity pools determining how much slippage occurs on large trades. As new weather data or seasonal updates arrive, traders adjust positions, shifting prices to reflect updated consensus on the likelihood of each temperature band.
This market resolves around Jul 11, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Kuala Lumpur on July 11 is verified and confirmed. The outcome is determined by comparing actual temperature readings against the predefined outcome ranges offered in the market. Resolution occurs after the event date has passed and credible public reporting or official meteorological data confirms the final temperature. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome range receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric anomalies can significantly move this market. El Niño or La Niña conditions, monsoon timing changes, or unexpected heat waves in Southeast Asia may trigger repricing. As July 11 approaches, daily weather model updates and satellite data become more influential. Additionally, historical temperature records for Kuala Lumpur in July and any unusual urban heat island effects could prompt trader reassessment. Breaking news about regional climate events or volcanic activity affecting solar radiation may also drive volatility in implied probabilities.
