Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning and market sentiment. While weather analysts rely on atmospheric models and historical data, this market aggregates dispersed information from many participants with financial incentives to predict accurately. Comparing the implied probabilities here to published forecasts from meteorological agencies can reveal where the crowd expects conditions to differ from baseline models, though both sources ultimately depend on the same underlying atmospheric conditions.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker mechanism where buying and selling pressure directly influences odds. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome contract trades between 0 and 1 cent, with the price reflecting the collective probability estimate. As traders buy contracts they believe underpriced or sell those they view as overvalued, the market continuously reprices to reflect new information and shifting expectations about Jeddah's peak temperature on the specified date.
This market resolves around Jul 5, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Jeddah on July 5 becomes verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing actual meteorological data against the predetermined temperature thresholds or ranges defined in the market's contract specifications. Traders holding positions aligned with the verified result receive their payout, while those on the incorrect side forfeit their stake.
Several factors could shift odds in this market before resolution. Updated weather forecasts from major meteorological agencies, seasonal climate patterns, and historical temperature anomalies for early July in Jeddah all influence trader expectations. Real-time atmospheric conditions, shifts in ocean temperatures, and broader regional weather systems affecting the Arabian Peninsula may prompt position adjustments. Additionally, as the event date approaches, increased certainty from refined forecasts typically narrows the range of plausible outcomes, potentially concentrating liquidity around the most likely temperature bands.
