Frequently asked questions

The Houston temperature market dashboard on Polymarket tracks real-time odds and trading activity for predictions on the highest temperature in Houston on July 9. Traders buy and sell shares based on their forecast of whether the peak temperature will fall into specific ranges—such as between 100–101°F. The dashboard displays current odds, historical price movements, and trading volume, giving participants a live view of how the market is pricing different temperature outcomes as new information and forecasts emerge.

Prediction market odds reflect the collective judgment of traders with real money at stake, often diverging from traditional weather forecasts. While meteorologists issue deterministic forecasts based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants into a probability. Traders may weight recent climate patterns, historical July temperatures in Houston, and ensemble model uncertainty differently than a single analyst. Over time, prediction markets have shown competitive accuracy against expert forecasts, particularly when participants have strong incentives to predict correctly.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker that adjusts prices based on buy and sell pressure. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome—such as the 100–101°F range—has a share price between 0 and 100 cents, representing the implied probability. When more traders buy shares predicting that outcome, the price rises; when they sell, it falls. This continuous price discovery mechanism ensures the market reflects the latest information and sentiment among participants right up until resolution.

This market resolves around Jul 9, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Houston on July 9 is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual peak temperature against the predefined ranges offered in the market. Traders who correctly predicted the temperature band receive their payout, while incorrect predictions result in a loss. Resolution is typically finalized within hours of the close of the trading day.

Several factors can shift odds in this market before Jul 9, 2026. Updated weather models and seasonal forecasts from meteorological agencies may indicate stronger or weaker heat patterns. Real-time atmospheric conditions—such as high-pressure systems, humidity, and cloud cover—will influence trader expectations as July 9 approaches. News about climate anomalies or unusual heat waves in the region can also prompt repricing. As the event date draws closer, intraday weather updates and overnight forecasts will likely drive final trading activity and price adjustments.
