Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Houston July 4 temperature market dashboard displays real-time odds and historical price movements for contracts tied to the highest temperature forecast in Houston on Independence Day. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature outcomes, and the current market price reflects the collective prediction of participants. The dashboard shows the leading outcome—currently whether the high will reach 83°F or below—alongside trading activity and cumulative volume. This live pricing mechanism lets you monitor how market sentiment shifts as new weather data and forecasts emerge leading up to the event.

Prediction market odds and traditional weather forecasts often diverge because they reflect different methodologies. Meteorologists rely on physics-based models and historical data to project conditions, while market participants price in broader uncertainty, media attention, and betting incentives. For a specific date like July 4, official forecasts from the National Weather Service typically become more reliable within 7–10 days of the event. This market allows you to compare the crowd's probabilistic view against published forecasts, revealing where traders see upside or downside risk relative to expert consensus. Such gaps can highlight underpriced or overpriced temperature scenarios.

On Polymarket, traders set the odds through an automated market maker that adjusts prices based on buy and sell pressure. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each outcome contract trades independently, so the price of the "83°F or below" outcome reflects the marginal probability that traders assign to that scenario. As new weather models release or conditions change, participants adjust their positions, moving the price up or down. The spread between bid and ask prices tightens or widens depending on trading volume and conviction, giving you real-time insight into market confidence around the final temperature.

This market resolves around Jul 4, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Houston on July 4 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the official high temperature for that day against the contract thresholds—in this case, whether it reaches 83°F or stays below. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the close of the trading day, allowing the market to settle based on confirmed meteorological data. Traders holding the correct outcome receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless.

Several factors can shift odds in this market before July 4. Updated seasonal forecasts, atmospheric patterns, and long-range climate indices may signal hotter or cooler conditions ahead. Major weather events—such as tropical systems, heat domes, or cold fronts—can trigger sharp repricing as traders reassess the probability of extreme temperatures. Media coverage of heat waves or unusual weather also influences sentiment. Additionally, as the event date approaches and official forecasts narrow, the market typically converges toward greater certainty. Real-time temperature data in late June and early July will be the most powerful driver of final odds.
