Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Guangzhou temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and historical price movements for contracts tied to the highest temperature recorded in Guangzhou on July 7. The interface displays current market probability, 24-hour trading volume, and order-book depth, allowing traders to monitor how sentiment shifts as the event date approaches. This market aggregates participant predictions into a single price that reflects the collective expectation of whether temperatures will reach specific thresholds on that date.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning and risk appetite alongside meteorological models. While meteorologists publish deterministic temperature ranges based on atmospheric data, this market prices uncertainty through continuous trading. Analysts may forecast a range, but traders here are committing capital to specific outcomes, which can reveal information gaps or consensus blind spots that pure models miss. The market price thus serves as an alternative signal to conventional forecasting.

On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling shares of competing outcomes through an automated market maker. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each contract represents a potential temperature threshold, and the current price reflects the probability that outcome will occur. As new information emerges—updated weather models, seasonal patterns, or real-time atmospheric conditions—traders adjust their positions, moving the price up or down. The spread between bid and ask prices tightens as the event date nears and uncertainty resolves.

This market resolves around Jul 7, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Guangzhou on July 7 is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data from recognized weather monitoring stations in the region. Resolution occurs after the event concludes and the final reading is confirmed, at which point all positions settle according to whether the actual temperature matched the contract terms.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric anomalies can significantly move this market. Tropical systems, monsoon intensity changes, or unexpected heat waves in the region would trigger rapid repricing. Additionally, historical temperature records for early July in Guangzhou may be revisited by traders seeking edge. As the event date approaches, intraday weather updates and model consensus changes will drive final volatility, with the largest moves typically occurring in the 48 hours before July 7.
