Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the dashboard for the Guangzhou July temperature market displays real-time odds and historical price movements for outcome shares tied to the highest temperature recorded in Guangzhou on July 2. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the current market price reflects the collective probability assigned to each outcome. The interface shows 24-hour volume of $111,502, cumulative trading activity, and order-book depth, allowing participants to monitor liquidity and track how sentiment shifts as new weather data and forecasts emerge.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment and risk appetite alongside expert models. While weather agencies publish deterministic or probabilistic temperature predictions, this market aggregates the views of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Traders may weight recent atmospheric patterns, historical July trends for Guangzhou, and model consensus differently than official forecasters, sometimes leading to odds that run ahead of or lag behind published forecasts. Comparing the two reveals how market participants assess uncertainty relative to institutional experts.

On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) or order-book environment. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature bracket is represented as a separate outcome, and the price of a share reflects the implied probability that outcome will occur. As traders place bids and asks, the market price adjusts continuously. Liquidity providers and arbitrageurs help narrow spreads, while large trades can move prices significantly. The final price visible on the dashboard represents the marginal cost of buying or selling one additional share at that moment.

This market resolves around Jul 2, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Guangzhou on July 2 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final temperature reading against the predefined brackets offered in the market. Whichever outcome bracket contains the verified temperature becomes the winner, and all shares in that outcome pay out in full while others expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours or a day after the event concludes, pending confirmation from official meteorological data.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can drive significant price swings in this market. Tropical cyclones, monsoon intensity changes, or anomalous heat waves affecting Southeast Asia may alter trader expectations for Guangzhou's peak temperature. Short-term catalysts include updated model runs from meteorological agencies, satellite imagery showing cloud cover and moisture, and historical analogues to past July heat events. As July 2 approaches, intraday weather updates and final forecast consensus will likely compress uncertainty and tighten odds around the most probable outcome.
