Prediction market odds reflect the aggregated beliefs of traders with real money at stake, whereas meteorological forecasts from official agencies and weather analysts rely on physics-based models and historical data. This market often incorporates analyst predictions but can diverge when traders expect model bias, regional microclimates, or unusual atmospheric patterns. Comparing the implied temperature range from market odds to published forecasts from China's meteorological authority can reveal where traders see asymmetric risk—for instance, if the market prices a higher tail risk than models suggest.
On Polymarket, traders buy and sell outcome shares, with the price of each share reflecting the collective probability assigned to that temperature range. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market uses an automated market maker (AMM) mechanism, so prices adjust continuously as traders place orders. Higher prices indicate stronger confidence in that outcome, while lower prices suggest traders view it as less likely. Liquidity and trading volume influence how quickly prices respond to new weather data or model updates.
This market resolves around Jul 11, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Guangzhou on that date is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological records, typically published by China's national weather service or recognized local monitoring stations. Once the final temperature is reported and verified, the market settles according to whichever outcome bracket or threshold the actual reading falls into, and traders holding the correct outcome receive their payout.
Major weather pattern shifts—such as the arrival of a cold front, tropical system, or heat dome—can significantly reprrice this market. Updated seasonal forecasts, real-time atmospheric pressure and humidity data, and historical temperature anomalies for early July all influence trader positioning. Additionally, revisions to long-range models from meteorological centers, unexpected urban heat island effects, or changes in air quality that affect local temperatures can trigger sharp moves. Close to resolution, intraday weather updates and live temperature readings will drive final price adjustments.
