Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather analyst forecasts because they incorporate real-time information, trader incentives, and market dynamics. While meteorologists issue point forecasts and confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, this market reflects what traders are willing to stake money on. Analyst predictions tend to be more conservative and model-driven, whereas market prices can shift rapidly in response to new satellite data, model updates, or changing consensus. Both sources offer value: analysts provide detailed reasoning, while markets aggregate dispersed information through price discovery.
On Polymarket, traders set prices by buying and selling outcome shares in an automated market maker (AMM) system. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range outcome has its own share price, and the sum of all outcome probabilities equals 100 percent. As traders place orders, the price of each outcome adjusts based on supply and demand. Higher trading volume typically narrows spreads and increases price accuracy, while lower volume can result in wider bid-ask gaps. The market price reflects the collective belief of all active traders about which temperature range is most likely.
This market resolves around Jun 15, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Chongqing on June 15 is confirmed and verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data reported by weather monitoring stations in the region. Once the event date passes and the final temperature reading is established, the market settles to the outcome bracket that matches the recorded high. Traders holding shares in the correct outcome receive their payout based on the final odds at resolution.
Major weather model updates and seasonal forecasts can significantly shift odds as traders reassess the probability of extreme heat or cooler conditions. Real-time atmospheric data, including pressure systems and moisture levels, influences short-term price movements. Historical temperature patterns for mid-June in Chongqing provide a baseline, but anomalies like heat waves or unexpected weather fronts can trigger rapid repricing. News of climate patterns, El Niño or La Niña effects, and even local urban heat island developments may prompt traders to adjust positions. As the event date approaches, actual daily temperatures in the preceding week often become the strongest driver of final market prices.
