Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, risk appetite, and information flow rather than relying solely on meteorological models. While meteorologists publish deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial incentives to be accurate. Comparing the market's implied probability to published analyst predictions can reveal where traders see value or disagreement. Both sources offer complementary perspectives: models provide scientific rigor, while markets reflect dynamic consensus and may capture emerging information faster.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares of binary outcomes—in this case, whether the highest temperature will reach a specific threshold on June 14. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price of each outcome reflects supply and demand; as more traders buy a particular temperature scenario, its odds rise, and vice versa. Liquidity and order flow determine how quickly prices move in response to new information. This continuous price discovery mechanism means the market adapts in real time as forecasts update or new data emerges.
This market resolves around Jun 14, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Chongqing on June 14 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the actual observed temperature to the threshold specified in the market's terms. Resolution typically occurs within hours or a day after the event, once official meteorological data is published and confirmed. Traders' positions settle based on whether the real-world temperature matches the outcome they backed.
Several factors can shift odds in this market before June 14 arrives. Updated seasonal weather forecasts, atmospheric pressure systems, or climate anomalies reported by meteorological agencies may prompt traders to reassess their positions. Major weather events or unusual patterns in the weeks leading up to the date could influence expectations. Additionally, historical temperature data for Chongqing in mid-June and real-time monitoring of regional conditions may trigger trading activity. As the event date draws closer, increased certainty from forecasters typically narrows the range of plausible outcomes and can stabilize prices.
