Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader positioning and uncertainty pricing. While meteorologists publish point estimates and confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the collective judgment of traders who face financial incentive to price outcomes accurately. Comparing current odds to published forecasts from weather services can reveal where the market is pricing in tail risks or consensus shifts that analysts may not yet fully reflect.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker mechanism where each outcome contract trades against a liquidity pool. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of each temperature band reflects the collective willingness of buyers and sellers to take positions, with tighter spreads indicating higher confidence and deeper liquidity. As new information emerges—such as updated weather models or seasonal patterns—traders adjust their positions, moving prices to reflect revised probabilities.
This market resolves around Jun 29, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Chengdu on that date is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is determined by the single highest temperature reading from official meteorological stations or recognized weather data providers for that calendar day. Resolution occurs after the event window closes and the final temperature is confirmed, at which point the corresponding outcome contract is settled and all other contracts expire worthless.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric data releases can significantly move odds in this market. Tropical systems, heat waves, or anomalous pressure systems affecting East Asia may trigger repricing as traders adjust for changing meteorological conditions. Additionally, historical temperature records for Chengdu in late June and shifts in global climate indices can influence trader positioning. As the event date approaches, intraday weather updates and model consensus changes typically drive the most volatile price movements.
