Prediction market prices often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment and financial incentives alongside meteorological models. While meteorologists publish deterministic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market aggregates the beliefs of participants who have money at stake. Comparing the implied probability from current odds to published forecasts from regional weather services can reveal where traders are more or less confident than official models, though both sources draw on similar underlying data about atmospheric conditions and seasonal patterns.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker that converts buy and sell orders into real-time odds for each temperature outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each contract represents a specific temperature range or threshold, and the price of that contract reflects the probability the market assigns to that outcome occurring. As new information emerges or trader sentiment shifts, prices adjust continuously, allowing you to enter or exit positions at any time before the market closes.
This market resolves around Jun 28, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Chengdu on June 28 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final confirmed temperature reading against the contract thresholds or ranges offered in the market. All open positions settle based on which outcome bracket the actual temperature falls into, with payouts distributed accordingly to traders on the winning side.
Weather model updates, seasonal climate patterns, and real-time atmospheric data releases can all shift trader expectations and move prices in this market. Major weather systems, monsoon activity, or heat waves affecting the region in the weeks leading up to June 28 will influence forecasts and trading behavior. Additionally, historical temperature records for that date and broader climate trends in Chengdu can serve as reference points that traders use to adjust their positions as the event date approaches.
