Prediction market odds reflect aggregated trader expectations and often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts. While weather analysts publish deterministic point estimates and confidence intervals based on numerical models, this market prices uncertainty through continuous trading. Traders incorporate analyst guidance, historical patterns, and real-time atmospheric data into their bids and asks. When professional forecasts shift, market odds typically adjust within hours. Comparing the two reveals whether traders are pricing in more or less extreme outcomes than official predictions suggest, offering insight into tail-risk perception.
On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker mechanism, where each outcome range has its own contract. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current odds reflect the collective bets of all participants, with prices moving as buy and sell pressure shifts. Higher-priced outcomes signal stronger trader conviction that temperatures will fall within that range. Liquidity depth determines how much trading volume is needed to move prices significantly. As June 18 approaches, prices typically tighten around the most likely outcome, with wider ranges trading at lower odds.
This market resolves around Jun 18, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Chengdu on June 18 is verified against credible public sources. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data from recognized weather stations or government agencies serving the region. Resolution occurs after the trading window closes and the final temperature reading is confirmed. Traders should monitor official announcements to understand which data source will be used for settlement. Early resolution is possible if the outcome becomes mathematically certain before the end date.
Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric conditions are key drivers of price movement in this market. Tropical cyclones, monsoon intensity changes, or unusual heat waves affecting East Asia could trigger significant repricing. Official meteorological agency updates and model consensus changes often precede market moves. Short-term catalysts include daily weather reports, satellite imagery of cloud cover, and upper-atmosphere pressure systems. As June 18 approaches, intraday temperature readings and hourly forecasts become increasingly important, with final hours seeing the most volatile trading as uncertainty collapses.
