Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional weather forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader behavior, uncertainty premiums, and forward-looking sentiment. While meteorologists issue point estimates or confidence intervals based on atmospheric models, this market aggregates the beliefs of many participants with financial skin in the game. Traders may price in tail risks or consensus shifts faster than official forecasts update. Comparing the implied probabilities here to major weather services' published forecasts can reveal where the market sees asymmetric risk or where consensus is building around specific temperature thresholds.
On Polymarket, traders set the odds by buying and selling shares in outcome buckets, with each share worth $0.01 to $1.00 depending on the implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly reflects the market's belief in that outcome: higher prices mean higher perceived likelihood. Liquidity pools or order books match buyers and sellers in real time, and the last traded price becomes the current market rate. As new weather data arrives or forecasts shift, traders adjust their positions, causing prices to move and creating opportunities for those who spot mispriced outcomes.
This market resolves around Jun 15, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Chengdu on June 15 is verifiable from credible public sources. The outcome is determined by comparing the final temperature reading against the predefined outcome brackets offered in the market. Resolution typically occurs within hours or a day after the event concludes, once official meteorological data is published and confirmed. Traders holding shares in the winning outcome bracket receive their payout, while losing positions expire worthless.
Major weather model updates, tropical storm formation, or shifts in seasonal patterns can trigger significant price swings in this market. Real-time atmospheric pressure changes, upper-level wind anomalies, or unexpected heat domes reported by meteorologists will likely prompt traders to adjust positions. News of air quality alerts or heat-related advisories issued by Chinese authorities may also influence sentiment. As June 15 approaches, intraday weather radar data and short-range forecasts become more reliable, often causing late volatility as traders converge on the most probable outcome. Historical temperature records for that date and time of year also serve as anchors for pricing.
