This market will resolve to the temperature range that contains the highest temperature recorded at the Cape Town International Airport Station in degrees Celsius on 31 May '26. The resolution source for this market will be information from Wunderground, specifically the highest temperature recorded for all times on this day for the Cape Town International Airport Station, available here: https://www.wunderground.com/history/daily/za/matroosfontein/FACT. To toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius, click the gear icon next to the search bar and switch the Temperature setting between °F and °C. This market can not resolve until the first data point for the following date has been published on the resolution source. The resolution source for this market measures temperatures to whole degrees Celsius (eg, 9°C). Thus, this is the level of precision that will be used when resolving the market. Revisions to temperatures recorded within this market's timeframe will be considered until the first datapoint for the following date has been published, after which any alterations will not be considered.
Prediction market odds on Polymarket reflect aggregated trader expectations, which often differ from traditional meteorological forecasts. While weather analysts rely on atmospheric models and historical data to predict May temperatures in Cape Town, prediction markets incorporate real-time information and trader conviction. Market odds tend to adjust faster than official forecasts when new data emerges. Comparing the two reveals whether traders are pricing in more extreme outcomes or showing greater confidence in moderate temperatures than meteorologists project for this southern hemisphere winter period.
On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. On Polymarket, the highest temperature outcome is priced as a set of binary or range-based contracts, each representing a specific temperature band. Traders buy and sell shares at prices between 0 and 1 (or 0–100 cents), where the price reflects the collective probability assigned to that outcome. As traders place orders, prices adjust dynamically based on supply and demand. The most likely temperature range commands a higher price, while less probable outcomes trade at lower prices, allowing participants to express precise views on Cape Town's May 31 peak temperature.
The market resolves on May 31, 2026, after the highest temperature in Cape Town on May 31, 2026, has been recorded and verified. Resolution is determined by the official temperature reading from the designated weather station or meteorological authority serving Cape Town. The outcome is binary or range-based depending on contract structure: traders who backed the correct temperature band receive their payout, while incorrect positions expire worthless. Resolution typically occurs within hours of the market end date once the final data is confirmed.
Major weather pattern shifts, seasonal forecasts, and atmospheric anomalies will drive price movement. El Niño or La Niña conditions, Indian Ocean temperature fluctuations, and Antarctic weather systems influence southern hemisphere winter temperatures. Updated meteorological models released in the weeks before May 31 will trigger significant repricing. Extreme weather events or heat waves in the southern hemisphere could shift trader expectations upward. As May approaches, real-time weather data and short-range forecasts become increasingly influential. Local Cape Town weather alerts and any unusual atmospheric conditions will cause rapid market adjustments.
