Frequently asked questions

On Polymarket, the Cape Town temperature market dashboard tracks real-time odds and historical price movements for predictions on the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on June 30. Traders buy and sell shares representing different temperature ranges, and the dashboard displays current probabilities, 24-hour trading volume, and cumulative liquidity across all outcomes. This live data reflects the collective forecast of market participants as they respond to weather models, seasonal patterns, and emerging atmospheric conditions leading up to the event date.

Prediction market odds often diverge from traditional meteorological forecasts because they incorporate real-time trader sentiment, historical volatility, and broader risk appetite alongside official weather models. While meteorologists issue deterministic or probabilistic forecasts based on atmospheric data, this market aggregates the financial commitments of many participants with different information sets and time horizons. Comparing the implied probabilities here to published seasonal or extended-range forecasts can reveal where traders are pricing in additional uncertainty or confidence relative to expert consensus.

On Polymarket, traders set prices through an automated market maker that maintains a constant product formula across outcome shares. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. Each temperature range outcome has its own share price, and the combined probability of all outcomes equals 100 percent. As traders buy shares representing their preferred temperature outcome, prices adjust in real time to reflect new supply and demand, allowing participants to enter or exit positions continuously until market close on Jun 30, 2026.

This market resolves around Jun 30, 2026, once the highest temperature recorded in Cape Town on that date becomes verifiable from credible public reporting. The outcome is determined by official meteorological data sources that document the peak temperature reading for the day. Resolution occurs after the market close window, allowing sufficient time for final temperature records to be confirmed and the winning outcome to be settled.

Major weather pattern shifts, updated seasonal forecasts, and real-time atmospheric developments will drive significant price movements in this market. El Niño or La Niña conditions, changes in ocean temperatures, and high-pressure systems over southern Africa can all influence June outcomes. Additionally, historical temperature anomalies, climate trend data, and unexpected weather events in the weeks leading up to June 30 may prompt traders to reassess their positions, creating volatility in implied probabilities across temperature ranges.
